Q & A

What are the requirements for being a surrogate?

If you agree to act as a surrogate for an intended family, you will be providing them with the opportunity to have a child they could not otherwise have. Acting as a surrogate can be a very rewarding experience and it requires responsibility and commitment. You will be required to keep appointments with NWSC and the other professionals associated with the program. You must be:

  • healthy physically and mentally
  • over 21 years of age
  • have a child and be parenting
  • willing to commit time and energy to the process
  • stable and mature
  • a non-smoker and willing to abstain from alcohol and drugs
  • willing to take medication by injection for several weeks.
If you are married or in a relationship, you will both be tested for HIV and other transmittable diseases. If you are married, your husband must be willing to participate in some of your appointments and sign the contract and the necessary legal documents. You must be willing to accept the risks of pregnancy and the medical procedures required for you to become pregnant as well as the emotional and psychological risks associated with surrogacy.

What is Gestational Surrogacy?

A gestational surrogate undergoes in vitro fertilization and has embryos transferred to her consisting of eggs and sperm from either the intended parents or from an intended parent and donor eggs or sperm. Women who have had tubal ligations can act as a gestational surrogate. All gestational carriers take medication as part of the IVF process, both before and after the embryos are implanted.

What is the nature of the relationship between a surrogate and the intended parents?

Most intended parents want to have contact with their surrogate during the pregnancy because they want to experience as much of the pregnancy as possible. They would love to be invited to attend your obstetrical appointments, ultrasounds, and the birth. Surrogates and intended parents vary in their desire for a continued relationship after birth. Some families and surrogates become very close and choose to continue their relationship. Others choose not to have much contact. NWSC tries to match families with surrogates who desire the same level of future contact.

You will enter into a contract with the intended parents before beginning the medical procedures and will sign additional legal documents both before and after the birth. You will have an attorney representing you during the legal process.

What can surrogates expect in terms of financial compensation?

First time surrogates receive a base fee of $23,000 and the additional payments increase the fee to $27,000. There are also other amounts paid to you for various items, such as an additional fee for carrying multiples, additional fees for undergoing a cesarean section or invasive procedures, and medical and life insurance if you do not have coverage. If you are required to reduce your work hours because of the pregnancy or are placed on bed-rest you will receive lost wages, childcare, and housekeeping. Intended parents will also pay the expenses for your medical and psychological screening, medical expenses at the fertility clinic, uninsured medical expenses during pregnancy, counseling, and attorney fees.

If you are a second-time surrogate, you will receive $28,000 as your base fee.

Payment structures vary, but most surrogates receive payments throughout the pregnancy with a balance paid after the baby is born and placed with the intended parents.
