Intended Parents Q & A

Intended Parents

For over fifteen years, Northwest Surrogacy Center, LLC (NWSC) has been matching intended parents with quality surrogates. NWSC also assists families who have already established relationships with a surrogate.

If you're searching for the perfect surrogate, we can help. We rigorously recruit the best candidates for surrogacy year round. Our surrogates range in age, experience and personality type and we work hard to coordinate suitable matches based on common interests and goals.

Typical Surrogate Profile

Surrogates in our program have previously given birth to a healthy child and are actively parenting a child. A surrogate must also be at least 21 years old, but most are between the ages of 25 and 37. Many of our surrogates are married and employed, although these are not requirements. We look for women who are mature, stable and able to make the commitment necessary to go through the demands of the medical procedures, pregnancy and placement. We do not accept smokers and women are required to abstain from drugs and alcohol.

Potential surrogates must pass a background check, a psychological evaluation performed by a clinical psychologist, and medical examinations. In addition to meeting with the surrogate, you will receive social and medical information about her.

Selecting A Surrogate

NWSC provides intended parents with detailed information about potential surrogates. You receive a profile with information provided by the surrogate which includes biographical information - medical and social history, physical description, and personal interests. We provide information regarding the surrogate and her husband or partner. Most importantly, you have the opportunity to meet and become acquainted with your surrogate. You may review multiple profiles and meet more than one candidate.

On-going Relationship With Your Surrogate

After choosing a surrogate, you will have the opportunity to begin the process of getting to know one another. The extent to which you develop a relationship with your surrogate is up to you. NWSC encourages intended parents and surrogates to become acquainted and spend time together beyond the introductory meetings in the office. We believe that a relationship between the surrogate and intended family establishes trust and serves as an important foundation for addressing concerns which arise in any complex situation.

Q&A

What does NWSC's fee include?

NWSC locates the surrogate for you, obtains criminal background checks, and conducts introductory meetings. We arrange for the surrogate's medical and psychological screenings and will negotiate and prepare the contract between you and the surrogate. However, intended parents and surrogates are represented by separate attorneys for the contract review and other legal procedures. NWSC will actively assist to resolve any concerns of either intended parents or surrogates during the pregnancy. We coordinate and arrange medical care, life insurance, manage the financial relationship between the surrogate and intended parents by serving as an escrow, and paying other professionals involved in the surrogacy process.

Who provides the medical services?

Portland has superior medical clinics with experienced and highly qualified reproductive endocrinologists. They are experienced with surrogacy and egg donation and have assisted NWSC in achieving many healthy and successful pregnancies. They will perform your surrogate's medical screenings and your IVF procedures and will coordinate with your medical clinic if you live outside the Portland metropolitan area.

How much does surrogacy cost?

The costs of surrogacy vary depending on whether you already have cryopreserved embryos, whether you need the assistance of an egg donor, and your surrogate's fee and individual situation. NWSC is aware of the financial stress that intended parents may have experienced before arriving at the decision to pursue surrogacy. We have designed our program in order to minimize the cost to intended parents. Please see Northwest Surrogacy Center Cost Estimates.

Is surrogacy legal in Oregon?

Surrogacy is legal in Oregon. Oregon law provides that a surrogate can be compensated for her services and there are well established procedures in Oregon to create the intended parents' legal relationships with the child and terminate the surrogate's relationship with the child. The parties enter into a contract and if the surrogate is married, her husband must be a party to the contract. The contract includes the terms required for the parties prior to conception, during the pregnancy and after birth. There must be a legal proceeding to create the intended parents' legal relationship with the child and terminate the surrogate's relationship with the child.

Do you work with families outside of Oregon?

Yes, NWSC works with many families who live throughout the U.S. and internationally. Most out of state families have their medical procedures performed by medical clinics in Portland. You will still have the same opportunity to attend your surrogate's medical appointments during pregnancy and attend the birth of your child.
